Victory for Plaintiffs in MTBE Jury Trial

SAN FRANCISCO - A Superior Court jury here became the first in the country Monday to declare gasoline containing MTBE a defective product. The verdict holds four oil giants - Shell Oil Co., Texaco Inc., Tosco Corp. and Equilon Enterprises LLC - liable for MTBE that leaked out of underground gas tanks and into public drinking wells in the Lake Tahoe area. Jurors also held Lyondell Chemical Co., which makes MTBE, liable for its product.
