Winston Churchill, who knew a thing or two about language, had it right when he said: "Broadly speaking, short words are best and old words, when short, are best of all."

Each word you use opens a hole from which energy drains out of your prose. Make sure every word - indeed every syllable - adds more in meaning than it consumes in reader effort.
