Sullivan & Cromwell, a big New York firm with 45 lawyers in Los Angles, lit a fire under East Coast year-end bonuses when it announced $35,000 for all first-year associates, no strings attached.

        The bonuses - comparable to the base-salary war started in Silicon Valley - are in addition to the $125,000 base salaries Sullivan & Cromwell and most other big-money firms adopted.
