State Legislature does not pass State Bar bill

The bar will turn to the state Supreme Court for authority to charge lawyers in 2017.

The state Legislature concluded its 2016 session early Thursday morning without enacting a bill authorizing the State Bar to collect dues from attorneys next year.

The two chambers each passed competing bills to authorize the bar to collect $390 from its members next year, but could not agree on a package of reforms for the embattled agency.
