9th Circuit tosses bad faith sanctions against Glendale law firm
Reversing the trial court, a unanimous three-judge panel held that sanctions imposed for actions that add to litigation expense can only be levied against an individual attorney and not a law firm, deepening a circuit split on the issue.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals tossed a sanctions order against a Glendale-based
law firm on Thursday, ruling that federal statute governing penalties for "bad faith"
actions that add expense to litigation can only be levied against individual attorneys
and not law firms.
