Retired federal judge Lawrence Karlton, praised for prison reform efforts, is dead at 80

Retired U.S. District Judge Lawrence K. Karlton of Sacramento was known as passionate and demanding and dedicated.

Lawrence K. Karlton, a 35-year veteran of the federal bench in Sacramento whose influential
rulings dealt with prison reform, California's water wars and the pledge of allegiance,
has died. He was 80.


Karlton was appointed to the Eastern District bench in 1979 by President Jimmy Carter
and retired last year. He died...
