White House Counsel Defends Bush Detention of 'Combatants'

WASHINGTON - White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales on Tuesday defended the Bush administration's detention of so-called "enemy combatants" in the war on terrorism and said that the White House would take a more active role in defending its decision, and its authority, to hold such combatants according to the laws of war.
