Law firms merged in unprecedented numbers in 2013

Nationwide, more than 85 U.S. law firm mergers had been announced by late December, shattering the previous record of 70 from 2008. Thirteen of the deals involved California firms.

In law firm business, 2013 was the year of the merger. Firms got together at an unprecedented rate on the national level, and observers predict such enthusiasm will continue into the new year.


Unlike in 2012, however, mega-mergers were rare. Most of the tie-ups were between midsize or large firms and small firms.
