Curtailing piracy of live sports broadcasts

With the support of the Obama administration, legislative solutions that have been proposed would give additional tools to the justice department to help deter unauthorized streaming piracy for commercial gain.

Approximately five years ago, the House Judiciary Committee, under the leadership of then-Chairman John Conyers, D-MI, held the first hearing to examine the state of copyright laws protecting sports broadcasts. The impetus for this hearing was the natural challenges technology poses to the static copyright laws in providing adequate protection for the creative community, such as the creators of music, movies, books and TV shows.
