'Consummate' Defender Dies of Heart Attack at 64

LOS ANGELES - Paul J. Fitzgerald often spoke to groups of lawyers, and his favorite topic was "Defending the Hopeless Case." Fitzgerald died of a heart attack Tuesday at 64, leaving behind friends and colleagues who praised him as a lawyer who fought gallantly even in the most impossible cases, including one of the biggest of them all, the Manson-family murder trial.
