SAN FRANCISCO - Oil companies knew for years the potential environmental hazards of the controversial additive MTBE but decided to use the chemical anyway because of government requirements to improve air quality and the substance's availability and ease of transport, an industry lawyer told a San Francisco Superior Court jury Monday.
