Former Freedom Rider reveals story in secret prison diary
Carol Ruth Silver was arrested as a Freedom Rider in June of 1961 and chronicled her time in jail on hidden scraps of paper. In her new book "Freedom Rider Diary," she shares her story.

Carol is a retired lawyer, activist and former elected official. She currently appears as a speaker for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP) opposing the U.S. policy of drug prohibition and has been working for the past 10 years to enhance education, particularly for women and girls, in Afghanistan.
Carol Ruth Silver was arrested as a Freedom Rider in June 1961. The Freedom Riders were civil rights activists who rode interstate buses into the segregated south to test U.S. Supreme Court rulings outlawing segregation in interstate bus and terminal facilities. Silver spent 40 days in Mississippi jails, including the Maximum Security Unit at the infamous Parchman Prison Farm.
