I briefly met these six men Kipling mentions in his pithy poem several years after they had left his employ. I cannot tell you much about Kipling, but I can tell you I found offensive his notion of "keeping" serving men, although it just might have been his quaint way of expressing the employment relationship.

As for me, it is hard enough to keep my wits, let alone six serving men, notwithstanding their purported hone...
