State Lets Malt Beverage Companies Slip Through Sweet, Legal Loophole

Forum Column - By James Mosher - Flavored alcoholic beverages such as Bacardi Silver, Smirnoff Ice and Skye Blue are mixed drinks posing as hip, trendy malt beverages. Also known as alcopops, these drinks are the distillers' answer to marketing woes in their competition with beer companies for the youth market. They carry popular distilled spirits' brand names and mask the taste of alcohol to reach young drinkers whose palates have not matured for hard liquor.
