Judges' Night draws crowd in LA

More than 150 intellectual property attorneys and judges gathered at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles on Feb. 19 to discuss recent changes in patent law. Judge Kathleen O'Malley of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal District delivered the keynote address, expressing her reservations about congressional overreach in patent reform, among other topics. She then joined in a panel discussion with U.S. district judges James Otero and George H. Wu, both part of the Central District Patent Program. The panel explored critical issues currently before the patent bar and the relationship between trial judges and appellate judges of the Federal Circuit. U.S. Magistrate Judge Suzanne Segal also received a Distinguished Community Service Award. The annual Judges' Night event was organized by the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association and the Paul R. Michel IP American Inn of Court. Also in attendance were the inn's current president, U.S. District Judge Gary A. Feess, as well as other members of the bench. — Jean Yung
