Court Upholds Furloughs, Budget Cuts

The California Supreme Court Monday upheld the furloughs and drastic budget cuts that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used to deal with a $40 billion budget shortfall two years ago.

The state Supreme Court Monday upheld the furloughs and deep budget cuts Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger used to close a $40 billion budget shortfall two years ago.

The justices also set some limits on the governor's power to force unionized state workers to take time off without pay in the future, leaving some doubt about whether a current round of furloughs will pass muster.
