Ensign Group to pay $48M for nursing home fraud

In what has amounted to one of the largest settlements for a case of this type, Mission Viejo based Ensign Group will settle claims that it knowingly defrauded Medicare for unnecessary treatment.

The Ensign Group Inc., a Mission Viejo-based company that operates nursing homes, will pay $48 million to settle whistleblower lawsuits alleging that it knowingly submitted inflated bills to Medicare for unnecessary or fictitious services to its elderly patients, the Justice Department said Tuesday.
