Plantation Workers' Sterilization Case Will Hinge on Causation
One worker testified that he drank half a liter of alcohol a day for three decades. Another man acknowleged that a sperm sample he gave as evidence showed he had gonorrhea. Because both alcoholism and gonorrhea can lead to sterility, the two Nicaraguan banana plantation workers proved less than ideal witnesses for lawyer Duane C. Miller, who is trying to prove to a jury in a Los Angeles court that a pesticide used in the fields caused the men's sterility.
