LOS ANGELES - John Zhang sounds like he could be from Colorado or Oregon. But he was born and raised in Hangzhou, China. He graduated from Beijing University with a literature degree in 1982. He was a graduate fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing from 1984-86 majoring in journalism.
