Some claim appellate ruling opens door for lawyers to be sued by competitors

A recent appellate court ruling is ruffling feathers among some attorneys, who call the decision "radical" and claim it opens the door for prosecutors and individuals to sue lawyers and law firms.

On its face, a recent appellate court opinion affirming an injunction against an immigration law firm for ethical violations seemed straightforward. The 1st District Court of Appeal ruled an attorney who failed to tell clients that his partner had resigned from the bar with disciplinary charges pending against him could be held liable for that lack of disclosure.
