Ushering in a Moral Code -- The Bawdy Era of Pimps and Prostitutes Gave Way to Progressives

1910 was a bad year for pimps, prostitutes and Democrats. It was the year the Progressives - a splinter group of Republicans - were swept into power in California. Under the banner of their Lincoln-Roosevelt League, California Progressives had succeeded in getting their candidate for governor, San Francisco attorney Hiram Warren Johnson, elected. The Progressives had expanded from their stronghold of Los Angeles and now held Sacramento.
