FIBER-OPTIC BUSINESSES WILL MERGE IN THE SILICON VALLEY

Avanex Corp. will acquire Oplink Communications Inc. for $305 million in stock. The deal was announced March 19. Fremont's Avanex produces and sells miniature photonic products that increase the speed and capacity of fiber-optic networks by separating the light pulses that travel through the network and controlling their power. Its major customers are Fujitsu Limited, Nortel Networks Limited and WorldCom Group.
