Lawyers defending beleaguered mortgage lenders have received a life line from a federal judge in Santa Ana who cast one company as a victim to powerful market forces.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Andrew Guilford dismissed with prejudice the securities fraud complaint against Impac Mortgage Holdings Inc., an Orange County lender that specialized in so-called Alt-A, or low-documentation loans.
