L.A. County's Top Lawyer to Retire After Wave of Controversies

Raymond G. Fortner Jr. leaves a legacy of near record-high litigation costs and top-dollar settlements, though he has contended his management was not to blame.

LOS ANGELES - More than three years after he was expected to retire, Raymond G. Fortner Jr. is stepping down as Los Angeles County's top lawyer, a role he has held for five of his 39 years with the county.

The county Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to begin a search for his replacement.
