Lawyer in Critical Condition After Shooting

A 58-year-old criminal defense attorney was in critical condition Tuesday after being shot at his Joshua Tree law office in the climax to an apparent long-standing feud with a paralegal, authorities said. Lawyer Bill J. Weir Jr., 58, was wounded in a shooting that also left his girlfriend and a handyman badly injured, a sheriff’s spokeswoman said. Weir’s legal assistant, Bernard Steppe, 66, was arrested after a short car chase.
