Former defender rare choice for federal judgeship

U.S. District Court nominee Paul L. Abrams' experience as a magistrate judge and federal public defender makes him a rarity

U.S. District Court nominee Paul L. Abrams, named Wednesday by President Obama to the bench in the Central District of California, is a rare appointee due to his roots as a federal public defender.

If confirmed, Abrams will fill the seat of U.S. District Judge Dean D. Pregerson, who has announced his intention to take senior status starting Jan. 28.
