Oil royalty class action centers on century-old deeds

In a breach of contract suit filed by mineral rights holders against oil company Warren E&P, a Los Angeles judge found that the complaint was defective for not specifically referencing the original nearly 100-year old deeds.

In a battle over oil and gas royalties paid to some 5,200 mineral rights holders in South Los Angeles, a superior court judge on Tuesday found that in order to accuse the oil extraction and production company Warren E&P Inc. of breach of contract, rights holders would have to first dig up their century-old mineral deeds.
