Presidents and pontiffs have an uneasy history, given that America was originally founded as a haven for Protestants fleeing the oppressions of Europe, often at the hands of Catholic elites.

In August 1993, after another long day of associate servitude, I got home, loosened my tie, poured a drink and turned on the tube. There they were; President Bill Clinton and Pope John Paul II, holding a joint press conference on the lawn of my alma mater, St. John Francis Regis High. They stood just outside the old "Senior Smoker" where smoking was allowed, but underclassmen weren't. To this day, it is the happiest and least hygienic room I have ever known.
