Projecting Doubt

Attorney John Barnett faces what could be his biggest challenge at trial: defending a police officer charged with murder in the videotaped beating of a homeless man.

The videotape was disturbing to watch. Shown in open court at the preliminary hearing of two Fullerton police officers charged with homicide, it captured the July 2011 questioning and brutal beating of Kelly Thomas, a mentally ill homeless man, outside the city's bus and train depot; Thomas died five days later. The 33-minute tape, recorded by a stationary surveillance camera, had been augmented with synchronized audio from recording devices worn by the officers.
