On March 29, the National LGBT Bar Association held its Out & Proud Corporate Counsel Award Reception at the Standard Hotel in West Hollywood. There were more than 150 attorneys in attendance. The organization, which honors a new lawyer each year, acknowledges “legal professionals who advance LGBT equality through words and actions to create more secure and welcoming workplaces,” according to its website. This year’s honoree was Christopher Murphy, vice president and deputy general counsel of DIRECTV Inc., for his involvement in the establishment of OUTLOOK, DIRECTV’s resource group for LGBT employees. “It’s a much different atmosphere now,” said Murphy as he accepted his award. “I’m happy to report things are getting better.” The event began with a welcoming message by D’Arcy Kemnitz, executive director of the National LGBT Bar Association, followed by opening remarks by Melissa Ingalls, a partner with Kirkland & Ellis LLP, and Dean Marks, senior vice president, intellectual property, with Warner Bros. Entertainment. “Diversity is more than a buzz word,” Murphy said. “It’s a strong commitment.” -David McAfee
