'Surfing Judge' Retires From Appeals Court Longtime 2nd District Court of Appeal Justice J. Gary Hastings has retired from the bench. Hastings officially stepped down Feb. 19 after 13 years with the court. He agreed to take a 60-day assignment with the court, however, while the court awaits the appointment of his replacement.
