Forum Column - By Rita Miller - My friend Gideon maintains that no first-rate private practitioner would want to become a judge today. It doesn't make sense to take a gut-wrenching pay cut just to win the right to stand for re-election in six years - that is, if the carpal tunnel syndrome you get from filling out your semiannual financial disclosure forms doesn't cripple you in the first year and if your background check doesn't reveal that your Bronze Star came out of a cereal box.
