OC judge says he may do the 'unthinkable' in mass murder case

Orange County Judge Thomas M. Goethals said he may dismiss death penalty against mass murderer.

SANTA ANA — Emphasizing that he may do the "almost unthinkable" and dismiss the possibility of the death penalty against a confessed mass murderer, Orange County Superior Court Judge Thomas M. Goethals scheduled an evidentiary hearing to begin May 23 that will focus on the sheriff's department's use of jailhouse informants.
