State Bar more aggressively targets unauthorized practice of law

The bar reported making 453 referrals to law enforcement for prosecution last year compared to just 11 in 2015.

The State Bar made 453 referrals of unauthorized practice of law activity to law enforcement for prosecution last year compared to just 11 in 2015, a more than 4,000 percent increase, according to the agency's annual discipline report.

The substantial uptick followed criticism of the bar last year amid reports that the agency let hundreds of such claims sit uninvestigated for months.
