Long Beach Bar Foundation celebrates milestone
Roughly 85 members and sponsors of the Long Beach Bar Foundation gathered Jan. 26 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the group's Shortstop program, aimed at diverting at-risk and delinquent youth and supporting their families. Singled out for special awards were past presidents of the Long Beach Bar Association, Frank R. Newall and Vern D. Schooley, who were recognized for their support and dedication to making a difference in the lives of young people. The juvenile detention program involves first time offenders as well as their parents or guardians, who participate in several courtroom sessions in which volunteer legal professionals and parolees dramatize the negative effects of a life of crime. — Ben Adlin
