Legal heavyweights, including former LA County DA, speak out on death penalty

Gil Garcetti, the former DA who once fought to repeal the death penalty, moderated a Los Angeles County Bar Association discussion featuring prosecutors, a criminal defense attorney and a retired judge.

LOS ANGELES - Former Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti, a vocal opponent of the death penalty who pushed for a failed ballot initiative to do away with it, sees an ailing system surrounding the ultimate punishment.


In particular, the number of exonerated death row inmates - including more than a dozen in Illinois - worries him. "That gave me pause," he said.
