LOS ANGELES - Former Los Angeles County District Attorney Gil Garcetti, a vocal opponent of the death penalty who pushed for a failed ballot initiative to do away with it, sees an ailing system surrounding the ultimate punishment.
In particular, the number of exonerated death row inmates - including more than a dozen in Illinois - worries him. "That gave me pause," he said.
