The future has a way of ginning up a lot of weird ideas, as well as raw emotions. Take nuclear-powered vacuum cleaners. In the mid-'50s Alex Lewyt of the Lewyt Vacuum Cleaner Company foresaw a day in the not-too-distant future when harried housewives would love to own one. In a similar vein, the U.S. Postmaster General predicted in 1959: "We stand on the threshold of rocket mail." Boy, talk about going postal!
