Students from a Rampart District after-school program participated in a mock trial before U.S. District Judge S. James Otero this month, arguing a hypothetical case over alleged negligence in a school science project gone wrong. The trial capped a 10-week legal education program through Heart of Los Angeles, or HOLA, designed to teach students from overburdened schools about the inner workings of the legal system. Appearing before Judge Otero were students Lesly Ochoa, Karina Sanchez, Cynthia Gonzalez, Samantha Sanchez, Roger Cruz, Richard Teyssier, Mario Teyssier, Chastidy Vasconez, Juan Correa and Santos Quintana, ages 12 to 14. Bingham McCutchen LLP sponsored the fifth annual event. Members of the Los Angeles legal community served as jurors. Following nearly an hour of argument, the jury was deadlocked, with jurors split evenly between plaintiff and defense. -Ben Adlin
