Senate Judiciary Committee debates meaning of ‘Californian’ while considering 9th Circuit pick
Washington, D.C.-based Kirkland & Ellis LLP partner Daniel A. Bress appeared before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday morning to testify on his nomination to a California seat on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Sens. Diane Feinstein and Kamala Harris have opposed his nomination, saying he lacks sufficient ties to the state.




What makes a Californian?
The state's senior Democratic senator seems to think that voting in, living in and sending one's kids to school within its boundaries has something to do with it.
But Republicans, like Texas Sen. John Cornyn, say a childhood in Gilroy, owning property there and occasionally practicing law in the state's court system is enough to earn the descriptor.
