The State Bar is inching closer to a $145 base licensing fee hike, but some legislators still appear skeptical of the need for the increase.

The bill, SB 176, passed the Senate Tuesday on a 32-4 vote. For the last several years, however, the State Bar's annual fee bills have passed the Legislature unanimously, save a disastrous bill failure in 2016 that forced the agency to trim its staff.
