Wildlife liability fund clears legislative hurdle

A bill to create a wildfire liability fund in California is one step closer to reality after a marathon hearing on Monday.

AB 1054 passed the Senate Energy, Utilities & Communications Committee on a bipartisan 9-2 vote.

The bill has received support from fire victims groups, local governments, logging companies, the National Resources Defense Counsel and other environmental groups. It also has the backing of the Consumer Attorneys of California, a key organization representing the plaintiffs' bar in the state.
