Accessory dwelling units: Statewide affordable housing solution?
Recent state legislation has reduced local control over ADUs in a variety of ways with more to come. State law now prohibits local ordinances that disallow ADUs, that eliminate or reduce parking requirements as well as water and sewer connection and capacity fees.

The California Department of Housing and Community Development estimated in 2018 that 180,000 homes need to be built each year to keep up with rising demand. Despite this, over the past 10 years an average of only 80,000 new homes were built each year.
