Number of participants in bar’s Lawyer Assistance Program grows only slightly

“Even with the significantly increased outreach, the number of new intakes in 2019 was only up 16 from 2018,” wrote Donna S. Hershkowitz, interim executive director of the State Bar.

The number of lawyers participating in the State Bar's Lawyer Assistance Program grew slightly in 2019, but officials say they fear many more are afraid to seek help, according to an annual report to the Legislature.

Most of the participants sought help for substance abuse but a large percentage also said they suffered from mental health issues, according to the report.
