Federal prosecutor’s murder-suicide among recent high profile cases

According to 2014 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, attorneys had the fourth highest suicide rate of any professional group after dentists, pharmacists and physicians. Bar Associations around the country have sought to address the problem. But overcoming the stigma with seeking help appears to be an ongoing issue.

The apparent murder-suicide committed by a federal prosecutor in an affluent Sacramento suburb on Sunday follows several other recent high profile cases in which successful attorneys have taken their own lives — and too often killed loved ones as well. Yet even with recent attention to suicides, programs designed to help struggling attorneys appear to remain underutilized.
