Should grocery store workers receive virus hazard pay?

A coalition of Trader Joe’s workers launched a petition this week calling for guaranteed forced closure pay as well as hazard pay at the rate of time and a half for “exposing ourselves (and our loved ones) to COVID-19.”

As state and federal legislators attempt to boost a workforce grappling with the coronavirus pandemic by introducing improved sick leave policies, workers at a national grocery chain say low-wage workers providing essential services deserve another benefit for putting themselves at exposure risk: hazard pay.
