Deputy Attorney General Bruce L. Ortega was preparing for an unusual two-case oral argument appearance in front of a Division Two panel of the 1st District Court of Appeal in San Francisco when he learned of an even more unheard of circumstance: He'd be arguing each case over telephone.
Hours later, he got the final word: Oral argument on Wednesday was no longer available via phone; it was canceled completely.
