As virus worsens, gig workers want AB 5 employee law enforced

In a recent letter addressed to Gov. Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Xavier Becerra, Gig Workers Rising demanded officials “seek injunctive relief to prevent the misclassification of workers,” direct state agencies to create “external and internal guidance for workers who are misclassified,” “communicate to all employers their obligations under local law,” and “explore rapid enforcement actions” when companies don’t comply.

As local governments try to contain the COVID-19 pandemic via lockdown and shelter-in-place orders, many gig economy workers are ramping up calls for state policymakers to aggressively enforce Assembly Bill 5, which workers say will help them better deal with declining demand, lost wages, and higher exposure to the virus.
