Who should be taking care of gig workers?
The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act extended unemployment benefits to independent contractors when President Donald Trump signed the bill Friday. The bill also increased the amount of money eligible workers can receive in unemployment benefits, in addition to expanding the benefit period.

Congress effectively created a “third category” of workers when it extended unemployment benefits to independent contractors in a $2 trillion COVID-19 economic stimulus bill, but the legislation could end up backfiring on gig economy companies that pushed for those benefits in the first place, according to one employment attorney, who said taxpayers and other employers will likely start to insist companies like Uber and Lyft pay for worker benefits themselves.
