Defenders say San Mateo criminal courts are unsafe, presiding judge says it’s getting better all the time

Criminal defense attorneys say they’re frustrated with the amount of administrative work and court proceedings they are required to do in person without sufficient social distancing.

Criminal defense attorneys say they’re frustrated with the amount of in-person administrative work and court proceedings required in San Mateo County Superior Court, and they are concerned about a lack of social distancing.

Presiding Judge Jonathan E. Karesh said, however, “We’re literally doing everything we can to socially distance and keep people away from each other, so I don’t know where this is coming from.”
