Video proceedings highlight technology gap among attorneys

Habeas attorneys are seeking postponement until in-person argument returns, but the state Supreme Court says no.

As a sole practitioner in rural El Dorado County, Mark E. Cutler's experience with video conferencing is limited to FaceTime chats with friends that sometimes freeze under spotty service. So when the state Supreme Court ordered all attorneys to conduct oral argument remotely because of the pandemic, Cutler felt he had a lone option: Postpone his habeas corpus case until in-person argument returns.
